ARTEL is a contemporary art group based in Chichester, set up in 1977 to inspire, generate and incubate work. Members are artists at different stages in their creative careers, meeting together to discuss ideas that can be taken forward into studio practice. Such collective thinking acts as a foundation for the annual exhibition.

This year, to help commemorate the 200th anniversary of Chichester Canal they chose the title ‘Lockgate 200 – Artel Artists Celebrate Chichester Ship Canal’. In this exhibition, which Catharine Somerville is part of, the artists hope to show some of the processes that go into developing ideas as well as ‘finished’ pieces in various mediums. This should make for a dynamic and thought provoking exhibition.”
