Bacal, Sharon

Artist Bio:

I have been creating paintings and drawings in my studio for the past 25 years.

I am a trilingual artist in that I use three different languages to express my voice.  My Conceptual Abstracts have an underlying theme of tolerance, equality and respect.  My Portraits are primarily commissioned pieces but they are my passion.  My Landscapes reflect my perceptions of nature, the majority of which depict areas all around Ontario,

I am not the first artist to find her calling as a second profession; I am a Chartered Accountant and was previously a partner at Coopers & Lybrand (now known as PWC).  Inspired by the biographies of other artists who had abandoned their careers, in 1995, I retired from public practice.

I attended Central Technical for Art Foundation Studies and then went on to the Toronto School of Art for four years and obtained a Diploma in Fine Arts.

I am also classically trained in the tradition of the old masters.  While maintaining my studio and continuing to pursue my art career, I studied on a part-time basis at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto until graduation.

Artist Statement:

I have been creating paintings and drawings in my studio for the past 25 years.

I see… I hear… I react… I express…

On March 17, 2020, my world changed.  The pandemic hit and I thought I would be a good girl, self-isolate for two weeks and it would all be over.  Ha!  I think it is pretty clear that the joke was on me.  I watched in stunning surprise as the news of Covid-19 unfolded before my eyes.

We are all in the same boat here.  We are dealing with life, one day at a time.

I am hunting down that silver lining.

My creativity has never been more charged.    I do not know what the future brings, but I do know that there will be light at the end of this tunnel.
