Athena Graves

Artist Bio

Athena Graves is a Toronto area artist, educator, and women’s rights advocate. As a sculptor, Athena uses her art to express the narrative struggles of women found in classical and western literature, such as women’s violence against women, the marginalization of women’s voices, and rediscovering the feminine divine. Her work also seeks to hold up the role of women as ‘makers’ – of life, of art, and of craft. While focusing on the sculpted form, her work employs a variety of media (including clay, ceramic, metal, fabric, and wood), and often incorporates an intersectionality between the visual form and the written word. She holds an honours BA in English and History, and a B.Ed, both from York University (Toronto), a ceramics certificate from Fleming College, and is currently working on a BFA in sculpture and installation at OCADU. For many years she taught English in the public school system, advocated for the rights of others in union work, and supported mothers in childbirth.
