Artist Bio
Olesya Bondareva is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary visual artist and award-winning documentary filmmaker whose work bridges drawing, painting, photography, performance, and film. Originally from Russia, she built her early career in photography and film — producing award-winning documentaries, curating photo exhibitions, and serving as editor-in-chief of a photo journal — before moving to Canada. After relocating, she shifted her focus to the visual arts, developing a practice in dry and oil pastels, watercolor, watercolor sketching, urban sketching, and mixed media. She is currently working on Sketching Belonging – From Stranger to Neighbor, a storytelling urban-sketch and art project about Toronto as a way to establish connection and a sense of belonging with the city. A frequent traveler, she uses urban sketching as a way to stay connected with the places she visits, transforming fleeting impressions into intimate visual records. She also integrates participatory processes into her art: she is the creator of Authentic Movement Solo, an innovative practice combining movement, drawing, and witnessing, and Sologram, in which participants design their own metaphorical art card decks. Within her broader concept Art-Resourceology, she develops methods for using art as a resource for self-expression and community building. Her current projects include “Body as Witness,” a video-photo-performance series exploring the body as a living archive, and ongoing pastel and watercolor series inspired by archetypal and natural imagery. Through these works she seeks to merge studio practice with performance and research, making art a site of intercultural dialogue. With a background in intercultural research and an eye for documentary storytelling, Olesya brings it to contemporary visual arts in Canada.
