Living-language-land: Word portraits from the Earth is a collection of framed textiles and wall hangings inspired by 26 carefully chosen words from endangered and minority languages from all over the world. For this project I created a ‘portrait’ of each word, using a multitude of threads and fabrics in all colours and textures. My intention was to engage emotions and light up curiosity about these little-known cultures, while also helping foster our own connection to land. I will speak about the process and challenge of designing and creating the collection. For a list and definitions of the words, click here: https://living-language-land.org/
From her Hillcrest Studio in Dundas, ON, Lorraine Roy marries her passion for textiles and her professional background in Horticulture to explore the biology, cultural relevance and mythology of trees. www.LroyArt.com, www.facebook.com/LroyArt, www.instagram.com/lroy.art/
