Lorna Poplak is a Toronto-based writer, editor, and researcher who has turned her fascination with Toronto’s history into a book about “the Don”, an account of the jail from its inception as the city’s new 1858 ‘goal’ through its jailbreaks and overcrowding to its eventual shuttering and rebirth. Conceived by well-meaning reformers of the penal system as a “palace for prisoners,” the Don Jail never lived up to its promise. The institution quickly deteriorated into a place of infamy where both inmates and staff were in constant danger of violence and death. At our last luncheon of the year Lorna will share her stories of the Don and its astonishing modern-day metamorphosis to a meaningful place in our modern city.
