La Belle Époque is the term commonly applied to Paris during the French Third Republic, 1871 -1914. That era conjures up a rich palette of artists. Here is just a partial list: Toulouse-Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edward Degas.

Of course, names and achievements in other areas spring to mind – Hector Guimard, Marie Curie, The Eiffel Tower, The first Cinema. What underlies this extraordinary flowering in the fine arts, architecture, science, technology? We will look at the violent birth of the French Third Republic, followed by dazzling economic, social and cultural boom times – especially the Paris World Fairs of 1889 and1900.

Peter Harris is the former Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science of the University of Toronto. He has presented the popular Curious Minds series – The Age of Upheaval: The 1920s and 30s in Paris, Berlin and New York; The 1960s: From Berkeley to Berlin; Designing the World: The Global Starchitects; and La Belle Époque & the End of Empires. He has also given presentations to various later life learning groups in Toronto, including Etobicoke Learning Unlimited, LifeLong Learning Mississauga, and Living & Learning in Retirement at Glendon College.
