WAAC Artist Margaret Rodgers will be running a weekly Art History zoom series looking at the developments towards Modernism in the late 19th century. Major periods will include Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and Post Impressionism with the focus on developments in Europe. Major themes featured in this series will be society, politics and personalities in this linear narrative.
Margaret Rodgers is an artist, writer and curator. She was founder of The IRIS Group, taught at Durham and Centennial Colleges, and was Director/Curator at VAC Clarington. She is the author of Locating Alexandra (Toronto: ECW, 1995) about Painters Eleven artist Alexandra Luke, and is published in various journals. In 2015/16 she curated Crossing Borders, an exhibition exchange between BluSeed Studios, Saranac Lake NY and VAC Clarington. In 2017-18 she was Guest Curator for The Robert McLaughlin Gallery exhibition Legacies: Luke, McLaughlin, Donovan and MacGregor.

Week 1: Neoclassicism
Neo Classicism looks at visual art through the lens of the French revolution and its aftermath, featuring the paintings of David and Ingres among others from late 18C into the first decades of the 19C.
Week 2: Romanticism
Passion is back, as we move into the Romantic era with the artists, writers and musicians whose work placed feeling and nature above all.
Week 3: Realism
Courbet says Show me an angel and I will paint one.
Week 4: Impressionism
Partying on in gay Paree with Impressionism, its precursers, connections and influences
Week 5 & 6: Post Impressionism
As the century wanes many isms fall under the umbrella of Post Impressionism, from the analytical works of Seurat to the psychological intensity of Van Gogh, all leading toward 20C modernism.
