Where Angels Come to Earth: An Evocation of the Italian Piazza is an unprecedented visual and poetic journey that allows readers to appreciate the Italian piazza like no other book in the English language. With a combination of artistic documentary photographs and lyrical texts, it reveals both the grit and beauty of daily life in Italian piazzas. The authors have focused on many of Italy’s piazzas – both North and South – still used by local residents as community gathering spaces. The book celebrates the Italian worldview as reflected in the humanity and social integrity of the Italian piazza and serves as a guide to travelers in search of diverse Italian destinations. Long-awaited, this book combines the artistic vision of two acclaimed Canadian creative professionals, photographer Vincenzo Pietropaolo and writer Mark Frutkin.

Lecture description: Vincenzo Pietropaolo will briefly introduce his work on social justice – immigration, disabilities, migrant farm workers and the relationship between photography and city streets (using photographs of Toronto as an example), which will lead into daily life of the piazzas of Italy.

Vincenzo Pietropaolo is an internationally recognized photographer born in Calabria, Italy and living in Toronto. He has published over a dozen art and photography books and is recognized as one of Canada’s pre-eminent documentary photographers. A storyteller at heart, he has distinguished himself as a photographic bookmaker, often combining photographs with his own original writing. His work is included in the collections of many institutions, such as the National Gallery, AGO, RIC. His work on social justice is currently a feature exhibition of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
