The Women’s Art Association of Canada is pleased to present: “Interpreting Muskoka: Abstract Paintings by member Elena Pope.

I am an intuitive painter living and practicing my craft in Toronto. My best work is when I let the right part of my brain direct the strokes at the beginning and I “respond” layer by layer until the painting becomes the story that needed to be shared…sometimes troubled and messy, occasionally light and bubbly. I see my canvases as projections of my constantly changing inner landscape. I create vibrant, bold, mixed-media paintings that evoke emotion. I love the versatility and boundless freedom that acrylics can offer. Various marks, textiles, and collage materials peek through the layers adding depth and character to the unfolding stories.

My recent work depicts some of the themes that emerged in the past 2 years, one of the most intense living experiences that most of us have ever experienced. It represents a journey expressing basic human emotions- fear, hope, strength, turmoil, anti-fragility, etc, in the context of a rapidly changing social and geopolitical landscape.
