During COVID, I contemplated the delicacy of beauty, especially as the world was confined and locked down. We all missed the experience of journeying to new places, new vistas. Our vision became smaller. We asked ourselves, “Where can I find joy?” But out of the darkness came new realizations: we grew to better appreciate the calming forces of nature, of simple pleasures, the importance of greenspace, and taking time to breathe.

I include in this exhibition images taken from my journeys pre-pandemic, when I was forced to armchair travel and imagine better days as I painted, as well as studies of local flora and fauna, observed through the seasons, as we emerged from the pandemic to reconnect with our environment.

These watercolours use soft bright colour and delicate layers of paint to capture a sense of light, texture, transparency and appreciation of our land and its inhabitants. Because I like to play, included are pieces on traditional paper, as well as on canvas, and pieces mounted on board and augmented with ink – even a few glass works thrown in: consider them variations on a theme. I encourage viewers to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty through close engagement with this subject matter, to find joy.

Travel with me, through time and space, traversing the globe or just exploring our own little corner. Let’s dance on this earth, if only for a short while.
