OPEN CALL: Keeping Dreams

The Women’s Art Association of Canada (WAAC) invites artists based in Canada from all backgrounds and disciplines to submit their work for consideration in our upcoming curated group exhibition, Keeping Dreams. The exhibition will run from Friday, March 22, to Saturday, April 13, 2024, in WAAC’s Dignam Gallery at 23 Prince Arthur Ave. in Toronto, Ontario.

The group exhibition Keeping Dreams will explore the multifaceted experiences of resilience in the face of adversity, along with themes of home, migration, and the pursuit of happiness.

Through various mediums including, but not limited to, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, installation, and video, we seek artwork that engages with the complexities of navigating challenges, embracing change, overcoming obstacles, finding moments of relief, and maintaining hope. Whether through personal narratives of migration and displacement, symbolic representations of resilience and adaptation, or explorations of the intersections between comfort and discomfort, distance and closeness, freedom and control, we encourage artists to share their personal stories and histories.

Some questions to think about when considering your artwork submission:

1. How does the concept of resilience resonate with you?
2. How has keeping a dream alive impacted you, your family, or your community?
3. What dreams are you keeping in your pursuit of happiness?
4. What stories have motivated you to overcome adversity?
5. How do you find strength in moments when it is difficult to dream?
6. How have perceptions of your family history shifted from childhood to adulthood?

The exhibition aims to create a welcoming space for dialogue, reflection, and connection, where diverse perspectives converge to illuminate the strength inherent in the human spirit. Through this exhibition, we hope to inspire viewers to consider their journeys of resilience, find solace, understanding for one another, and inspiration in the power of storytelling through art.

Keeping Dreams is curated by WAAC’s Head of Program Development and Exhibitions.
