Member Call: Dynamic Range

The Women’s Art Association of Canada (WAAC) invites members to submit their lens based work for consideration in our upcoming photo group exhibition, Dynamic Range. The exhibition will run from Thursday, May 23, to Saturday, June 15, 2024 in Dignam Gallery.

From the purest white to the deepest black, the term dynamic range describes the span from brightest to darkest seen in a photograph. “The best digital cameras capture only half as much range as the human eye” (Duchesneau & Jensen).

Through works which utilize a lens as a primary tool to making art, this group exhibition aims to explore the range of the human eye through modern analogue and digital extensions.

Some questions to think about when considering your submission and writing your statement:

1. How does your lens-based work explore the concept of dynamic range, both in terms of technical execution and conceptual interpretation
2. In what ways does your lens-based work engage with the limitations of digital cameras in capturing dynamic range, and how do you navigate these constraints creatively?
3. How does your lens-based work reflect or respond to the dynamic range of emotions experienced globally amidst current world events, such as the ongoing pandemic, social unrest, or environmental crises?
4. How does your artistic practice engage with the notion of dynamic range as a reflection of the diversity of voices, perspectives, and lived experiences shaping our interconnected world today?
5. How does your lens-based work explore the boundaries between truth and fiction, reality and illusion, particularly in an era of widespread misinformation and digital manipulation.
