Ruth Upjohn Gallery

From a decolonial, intersectional and transnational feminist perspective, “MARCH ON” exhibits the photographs from Yafang Shi’s long-term and ongoing documentary photography project on social movements for women’s rights and social justice (2017-2025). It includes photographs of the Women’s March in Toronto immediately after the inauguration of Donald Trump as the US president in 2017, the latest People’s March in Washington D.C. right before the inauguration of Trump as US president in 2025, and many marches between them. This exhibition also displays a socially engaged installation “Screaming Red Lanterns” that Shi collaborated with Susan Wu. This installation speaks to the voices of women and people in marginalized positions, the censorship of them and the root cause of it, and the resistance to the censorship.
