Geraldine (“Geri”) Sadoway, Botanical Artist - gerisadowayart@gmail.com

Artist statement:

For the past 15 years I have concentrated on botanical and nature drawing using graphite, ink, coloured pencil, water colour and gouache. Drawing enables me to appreciate the natural world in all its complexity of line, shape, colour and texture. Drawing with graphite is meditative and mesmerizing, attempting to capture the subtleties of tone, value, light and shade to reveal the beauty of a living individual plant. Sketching outdoors with ink and water brush allows me to feel the changing life of the subject and share this life as I create shapes and colours on the page. The experience of drawing and painting is beneficial in itself!

Botanical and nature drawing has introduced me to the fascinating world of botany and ecology and connected me to communities of artists, writers, botanists and scientists who are actively involved in celebrating the beauty and value of the natural world and seeking to nurture and protect it. I am a member of the Botanical Artists of Canada, the American Society of Botanical Artists, the Southern Ontario Nature and Science Illustrators and the North American Native Plants Society, and I have participated in many workshops, conferences, talks and exhibitions of these organizations.
