Artist statement/bio

Karen Perlmutter is an award winning Photographer living in Toronto, Canada. She is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, and was a resident of the Banff School of Fine Arts. Upon graduation, Karen worked as a photo assistant to Photographer Ken Bell.

Karen spent 15 years meticulously Photographing The Pino Christmas Series, which is housed in the Bibliothèque National in Paris, France.

Karen opened her first commercial Photography studio 38 years ago. “I’ve had a very exciting career, with a particular emphasis in portrait photography. I have also travelled throughout Mexico, France and Italy, photographing landscapes and street scenes for Solo Exhibitions. The texture and detail of the scene is where my inspiration lies. I still shoot film, and my signature camera is a plastic toy camera. I love the quality of film; each type of film rendering a different mood and emotion to the subject. I work with intention, accentuating the fine details of each shot."

We wish to acknowledge this land on which the Women’s Art Association of Canada operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.

Since 1887
The Women’s Art Association of Canada is a diverse and inclusive non-profit arts hub offering exhibition, education and volunteer opportunities for men and women with a passion for the arts. Two historic gallery spaces on the main floor of the heritage building at 23 Prince Arthur Avenue in Toronto are open to the public: The Dignam Gallery and The Ruth Upjohn Gallery.

Each year, the Dignam Gallery hosts 4 group exhibitions open to all members, community outreach exhibitions, Signature exhibitions, scholarship exhibitions in the summer months, and the Artist-in-Residence exhibition in the fall. The Ruth Upjohn Gallery is available to members for solo or group exhibitions. Members include practicing professional artists who have been exhibiting for decades, and self-taught artists showing their work in public for the first time. All are welcome!
