A Studio of Her Own
Canadian women artists at the turn of the twentieth century left us the legacy of their work. Their landscape, portrait and still life paintings hung alongside those of the male members of the art societies to which they belonged. But women members were few in number, and their participation was limited. In fact, in addition to their work, the real legacy of these women lies in the fact that they produced art of such high quality at a time when convention dictated that a woman s place was in the home, not the studio. For many women art workers, it took a society of women, a sisterhood of sorts, to support and validate their identity as artists. Art historian Christine Boyanoski is an independent curator, writer and lecturer.
