Vegetable gardener and filmmaker, Jamie Day Fleck, discusses her journey into Urban Agriculture and growing food in Toronto which resulted in her feature-length documentary In My Backyard.
Jamie Day Fleck was born in Florida and then moved to Toronto, Canada. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Parsons School of Design in New York City though. She always had an interest in film and took many film production and film history courses which studying at Parsons. In New York she started her commercial photography career relocating back to Toronto in 2011. Portraiture was her main interest in photography which led her into documentary filmmaking focusing on creative process.
She received her Masters of Fine Arts in Documentary Media from Toronto Metropolitan University in 2014. Her first short documentary and thesis project, Photos by Kirk about an Armenian Genocide survivor won an Award for Social Justice. Her documentaries have won awards and screened at film festivals in the US and Canada. Her films tend to focus on artistic process and environmental issues. Jamie lives in Toronto with her husband and two daughters.
