WAAC Education Committee presents ARTIST VOICES Speaker Series with Lori Ridgeway

My artistic learning journey has been very compressed, starting casually in 2015 and in earnest in 2020. By several indicators (e.g., representation, sales, prizes, and my personal understanding and satisfaction), it has been successful. I have been frequently asked what has made the greatest contribution to my learning. This presentation contains key realizations and insights that have been crucial to my progress, describing my approach to learning and painting, both in process and outcome.
The presentation will cover topics such as abstraction, color theory and strategies, compositional priorities, painting process, and troubleshooting.
Artist Bio
Lori Ridgeway is a landscape oil painter, originally from Alberta, now living in Ottawa, Ontario. From her experience in the Rockies to her current locale, her priority has been relishing a sense of ‘immediate place’. She is inspired by forests, grasses, marshes, and shorelines, concentrating on expressing rhythm and patterns of line, shape, color, and light and shadow in the near landscape—never shying away from the complexity that lies below the superficial and often unnoticed details of everyday life.
Lori’s first interest in art was in high school, where she was active in the visual arts. After a long non-art career, which strongly influenced her artistic vision, she returned to oil painting in 2015. She implemented an aggressive learning plan, taking diverse classes and workshops in Canada and the United States to inform her intuition and painting process.
She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists, a supporting member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and an active member of the East Central Ontario Art Association, the West Carleton Arts Society, and three other local Ottawa Societies. Her paintings have been accepted into local, regional, national and international juried exhibitions. She has won numerous prizes including five best-in-show awards in the last three years, regionally and nationally.
