Stephen is a former President of the Board for the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD), Washington, D.C, and a co-founder of CONTACT, Toronto’s annual photography festival.

Each of these photographers embeds themselves amongst their subjects, and lives with them 24/7 as they work on their projects for either weeks, or months, or years. Producing work since the late 1960s, these four women are internationally recognized for their contributions to documentary practice. They are also famous for their methodology of living amongst their subjects, earning the respect of those depicted and offering the viewer a more intimate record through their committed engagement.

Jill Freedman was active in the 1960s through the mid-80s; Ewald and Meiselas have been active since the early 1970s and continue to work to this day. Leistner’s practice began in the mid-1990s and is internationally recognized for carrying on this tradition of immersion with her subjects.
